Midnight Snack #14: Carlo Lio – My Thang EP
Last Monday, Carlo Lio released his latest EP – My Thang – and boy is it a banger. The 4-track EP is his first release on Mindshake Records since the Finder’s Keepers EP in 2011.
Title track “My Thang” is a dangerously captivating and hearty track meant for the floor. Next, Sean Random delivers a deep, teched-out take on it which is sure to electrify listeners around the world. B-Side “Pepito’s Groove” takes its time to evolve and traverse an assortment of grooves. Fer BR’s dark and delicious remix leaves the listener wanting more. The energy on this EP never wavers. You could play it over and over and be drawn to something new every time.
Lio consistently manages to deliver tech house in a distinct way, expertly crafting a balance between driving techno beats, layers of house percussion, sparse effects, distorted vocals, and intriguing song structure. It’s as though he finds a way to capture a few hours on the dance floor with Marco Carola, Carl Cox, or Dubfire (all who he mentions as large influences on his style) and condense them into an 8-minute package. It’s exciting, interesting, and fun, and you certainly don’t want it to end. No wonder he’s been featured on several top notch record labels including Nic & Mark Fanciulli’s Saved, Nicole Moudaber’s Mood, and Dubfire’s SCI+TEC.
“My Thang” is also featured in Lio’s badass set from BPM Festival which you can check out right here.
